Spring Has Sprung (+Treats for Your Eyes and Ears) Photo

by Team Thinx | 03/21/2017

Ahhh, spring. Sun is shinin’, birds are tweetin’, the weather is warming up. It’s the perfect time to organize an epic picnic, fly off on a cross-country roadtrip, OR lock yourself in a dark room and watch all the new shows and movies that are coming out (okay, maybe a healthy mix of all of the above is best).

In honor of the first day of spring, we’re rollin’ out the red carpet for our #THINXpics, everything we’re jump-out-of-our-undies excited for this season.

What’s hitting your screen this spring? Chirp away on what you’ll be watching and listening!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Netflix

What we’ll be streaming:

13 Reasons Why (Netflix, March 31)

YA fiction, no longer relegated to the world of teenage drama, often tackles tough topics, the kinda stuff people are really nervous to talk about. So, I was excited to hear that 13 Reasons Why, a book that deals with teen suicide, was being made into a Netflix series, produced by no less than Selena Gomez, an actor who has herself been public about her battles with mental illness.

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu, April 26)

Wellllll, this show doesn’t look totally realistic and deeply disturbing at the same time. . . not at all. The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s (Queen of dystopian feminist fiction) novel of the same name, tells the story of Offred (Elisabeth Moss), who lives in an oppressive maybe-future society where women are relegated to being no more than a walking womb. Yeah, you’ll be ready to fight the power after catching this one.

Veep (HBO, April 16)

I’d watch Julia Louis-Dreyfus do just about anything (JLD - Please start live-streaming your dental hygiene routine. K, tx. - Mia), so I’m pretty excited for the new season of Veep. Choice line from the trailer, as no-longer-president Selina Meyer talks to old rival Jonah Ryan: “I will destroy you in ways that are so creative, they will honor me for it, at the Kennedy Center.”

Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt (Netflix, May 19)

This delightfully bonkers show from Tina Fey, starring Ellie Kemper, is worth watching for the amazing Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess) alone — his Bey-inspired season 3 teaser has given us new reason to live.

Twin Peaks (Showtime, May 21)

Is Twin Peaks one of those shows you’ve been “meaning to watch” since that college party when you pretended to know who Laura Palmer was to impress some know-it-all artsy dude? (I meannnnn, not that I would know what that’s like or anything.) Well, since the new season premiers in May, you have a timeline for taking action -- these shows won’t watch themselves, people! Bonus: The style inspiration is may-jah.

What we’ll be going to the cinema to see IRL?

Colossal (April 7)

Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is a party girl with a drinking problem, a lot of sharp one-liners, and artfully done “morning-after” eyeliner. Oh, and she seems to be controlling the Godzilla-like monster wreaking havoc on Seoul. Weird? Definitely. Am I here for it? Yes, yes I am.

The Circle (April 28)

Another one of our most-anticipated book-to-screen adaptations, The Circle, is based on a Dave Eggers books of the same name. Did I mention it was voted by my book club as the novel most likely to make you want to delete all your social media accounts, like yesterday. Also, Emma Watson! And John Boyega!

Sleight (April 28)

A hit at Sundance Film Festival, Sleight is a superhero origin story, with a twist. Bo (Jacob Latimore) is a high school kid and street magician (his powers are magnetic) who gets tangled up with a local drug dealer (and a super cute love interest). When the business goes bad and he needs to protect his little sister, Bo must rely on his magic skills to save the day.

Lorde, Green Light via iTunes

What we’ll be listening to:

Haim

Your fave folky band of sisters (and summer festival outfit inspo) canceled last summer’s European tour dates because they were at “critical point of finishing” their follow-up to 2013’s Days Are Gone. Don’t finalize any summer road trip playlists without hearing this band’s probably catchy, definitely dreamy new album.

Kelela

You may have caught this R&B rising star’s haunting vocals on “Scales”, a track on Solange’s recent masterpiece, A Seat at the Table.  If so, you’re definitely looking forward to her new album (while we’re waiting, Cut 4 Me and the Hallucinogen EP are definitely worth a revisit).

LIV

This nordic supergroup is fronted by Lykke Li, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt, and has assistance from Björn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn and John) and Wyatt’s Miike Snow bandmate Pontus Winnberg. Li told Pitchfork the sound is a mixture of Swedish melancholic melody and Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk” or Crosby, Stills & Nash. So, basically, all the good things.

Lorde

You’ve probably already (unconsciously) memorized the lyrics to Lorde’s latest hit, “Green Light”, (or yelled “I DO MY MAKEUP IN, SOMEBODY ELSE’S CAR” on the dancefloor), so if that’s anything to go by, we should be bouncing around to Lorde’s follow up album to 2013’s Pure Heroine any minute now.

Sky Ferreira

With Sky Ferreira, you never know what you’re going to get, (eg. a Playboy cover apparently heralded the visual introduction to her new album Masochism) except, hopefully, a great new bunch of songs!

St Vincent

Moody, languid, spacey, and with the guitar skills to boot, St Vincent (Annie Clark) doesn’t really need to change a whole lot to keep fans coming back to her sound. But, like all great musicians, she isn’t one to rest on her laurels — she’s promising a “real sea change” for the sound of her new album, and “the deepest boldest work” she’s ever done. We can’t wait to see what she had in store.
