JENNIFER ANISTON IS FED UP

Jennifer Aniston is fed up. She describes herself as so in a piece she wrote for the Huffington Post titled For The Record, and the phrase itself, though in the introductory paragraph, stuck with us through her entire piece. Fed-up is such a last-resort phrase, is it not? With the paparazzi waiting for her outside every door and the media speculating on whether she was pregnant (bc I guess if you’re stomach doesn’t resemble a washboard you’re pregnant now?) Jennifer Aniston has been patient for far too long, and we’ve taken advantage of her kindness and good nature. It’s over--our intense curiosity and near obsession to know whether Aniston is pregnant has been shut down, and we best not bother her again.

“I used to tell myself that tabloids were like comic books, not to be taken seriously, just a soap opera for people to follow when they need a distraction. But I really can’t tell myself that anymore because the reality is the stalking and objectification I’ve experienced first-hand, going on decades now, reflects the warped way we calculate a woman’s worth,” the actress wrote.

Aniston does not take part in social media and has always attempted to stay out of the public eye when not promoting her films. We don’t blame her for shunning the tabloids over the years as they've scrutinized her relationship with Brad Pitt and not long after, Angelina Jolie. They’ve showed up, uninvited,  to every relationship she’s been in since, has meticulously watched her weight and her face and her ring finger and yadda yadda yadda. 

“Here’s where I come out on this topic: we are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone. Let’s make that decision for ourselves and for the young women in this world who look to us as examples.”

It is no secret that the “When will Jen find a man?!” was a regularly occurring narrative from 2005-2015. Aniston had to spend 10 years listening to people question when she will find “the one”, while she was doing a whole bunch of other important things. Aniston was whole those throughout those 10 years, she did not need to be in a relationship to prove her worth. She doesn’t need a baby to prove it, either. Her point is, here, is that there is no story and never was. And she’s fed up, and she has every right to be.

WONDER WOMAN WAS DIRECTED BY PATTY JENKINS 

In 2017, we will be receiving a superhero movie starring a woman, which as you know is quite the rarity. Something seen even less? A superhero movie starring and directed by a woman. Can we buy our tickets now orrr???

Wonder Woman will be starring Gal Gadot (best known for The Fast & The Furious franchises) and will be directed by Patty Jenkins (who most famously directed Monster, a film that won Charlize Theron an Oscar.) Because only 9% of women direct the top 250 domestic grossing films, this is a veryyyy big deal, and it’s future impact is not lost on Gadot and Jenkins.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gadot said,  “It’s a story about a girl becoming a woman. I think only a woman, who has been a girl, can be able to tell the story in the right way.”

Gadot also spoke about her connection with Jenkins, and how their deep understanding of each other's emotions created a powerful story on screen.

“I’m lucky in that I’ve worked with men who have a lot of respect for women. But working with a woman is a different experience. It feels like the communication is different. We talk about emotions. With Patty, it’s a thing now, we communicate with our eyes. She doesn’t need to say a thing. If I’m hurt, she feels the pain. It’s a whole different connection that I have with her. "

As we have been reminded by this week at the Ghostbusters premiere, representation matters. Girls need to see woman in dynamic roles, but also know that woman can create badass films, too. We’re glad that Gadot and Jenkins are reminding us that representation behind the camera matters too.

JILLIAN ANDERSON GIVES A SHOUT-OUT TO KATE MCKINNON

With The X-Files being the longest running sci-fi show to date, 90’s kids (ahem, most of team THINX) had the opportunity to spend their childhood with Dana Scully, an FBI Agent with an M.D., played by Jillian Anderson. Scully was a character that many of us attempted to emulate, and SNL and Ghostbusters actress Kate Mckinnon was no exception.

Anderson took to Twitter this week with a photo of Mckinnon that perfectly encapsulates Girl Power in the 90’s. “Kate McKinnon, we have something in common & it's not slimy green things. #Ghostbusters #thefutureisfemale” she captioned alongside a photo of Mckinnon dressed as Scully, complete with her FBI badge and trench coat.

This sweet Twitter moment not only remind us that strong female characters in television is superrr important, but started a chain of woman posting their childhood Scully costumes. Science-fiction-lovers, unite! Could this be a start of future collaboration or friendship between Anderson and Mckinnon? If so, can we come too??

THE OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR LOVING HAS BEEN RELEASED

The trailer for the film Loving has been released, and will be in theaters November 4th. Although the premiere is over 3 months away. The film has already received a positive reception at Cannes Film Festival, is now gaining Oscar buzz, and has induced allllll of our tears.  All of 'em. Srsly, the trailer alone is a masterpiece.

Loving is based on the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, a couple from Virginia who fought for interracial marriage for 9 years. The case went allll the way to the Supreme Court, where they were able to invalidate the laws prohibiting interracial marriage (yes, that was really a thing.)

Starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton, Loving tells a story that not everyone knows, but certainly should. Mildred and Richard were sentenced to prison in 1958 (only 58 years ago), as their relationship did not abide by the state of Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws. This law was enforced partly to attempts to avoid the conception a mixed-race children.

Mixed-race men and women have been expressing their excitement and the importance of this incredible film. Natalie, a content editor at our sister brand Icon, wrote “I'm interracial. My kid's interracial. So you can imagine that I'm stoked about a film based on the couple at center of the landmark 1967 Supreme Court ruling that overturned laws against interracial marriage. Love is love is love is love.” No truer words.
