Halloween can be a real hoot (sorry), but it can also be an unfortunate time where you see a celebrity you admire dress in something entirely inappropriate (and we're not talkin' about wearing something sexy or revealing). When you see a celeb dress up in blackface, or take part in any form of cultural appropriation, you feel angry, annoyed, and ultimately let down. You wince when you see it, and wait for the inevitable “I’m so sorry! I had no idea!” tweet, but ultimately, the damage is done. Because this is still something that regularly happens, despite great resources like this and this, it’s important for us to celebrate cool feminist women dressing as other cool feminist women and characters so our heads don't explode from all of the ignorance! BETTE MIDLER AS WINIFRED SANDERSON

Bette Midler went as herself, er sorta. Midler reprised her role as the wickedly evil and beloved witch Winifred Sanderson, the leader of the Sanderson Sisters from the 1993 classic Hocus Pocus. Winifred may have terrorized Salem in the hopes of obtaining youth, but her response to two lame teens saying she’s “not even cute” is still a favorite moment in our books (she puts them in bird cages. It’s the best.).

BEYONCE, BLUE IVY, AND TINA LAWSON AS SALT N PEPPA

A family that costumes together, stays fierce as hell. This year, Beyoncé, her mother Tina Lawson, and Blue Ivy went as the iconic 80’s rap group Salt-N-Peppa. One of the first female rap groups, Salt-N-Peppa won a Grammy for best rap performance in 1995. This costume is 3 generations of perfection.

SHONDA RHIMES AS BEYONCÉ

Shonda Rhimes went as Beyoncé...need we say more??? Rhimes dressed in one of the most iconic looks from the music video Formation. The music video told the story of black women in New Orleans, the current state of police brutality, and black girl magic. Rhimes slays, all day (okay). 

KATY PERRY AS HILLARY CLINTON

It’s no surprise that after months of campaigning  that Katy Perry would go as presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, but it is surprising how far she went to embody the role. Despite the costume almost looking a little *too* lifelike, we admire Perry’s dedication to her candidate of choice!

ZOE KRAVITZ AS PRINCESS PEACH

Whenever I played a Nintendo growing up, I always picked Princess Peach, because she was the only girl and I loved her dress. At times I would get frustrated that there was only one female avatar, but I did bond with Peach, and loved watching her compete against her peers. Zoe Kravitz totally embodies the beauty, strength, and resilience of our early video game heroine, wouldn’t you agree?

ROWAN BLANCHARD AS SAILOR MOON

What better childhood superhero was there? Not only did Sailor Moon save Earth time and time again (casual), but she embodies perseverance, badassery, and imperfections. Rowan Blanchard perfectly attained the Sailor Moon look, from the bows to the boots.

LENA DUNHAM AS A GRABBED PUSSY

One of the most topical costumes we saw a celeb wearing this year was Lena’s Grabbed Pussy costume. Its cheeky and purposefully unsettling, reminding Drumpf that we’re not going to forget or forgive such a gross phrase (also we love those paws, they look warm).

ARIANA GRANDE AS SUZY FROM MOONRISE KINGDOM

Ariana Grande played adventurer and hopeless romantic Suzy from the 2012 Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom, alongside her boyfriend Mac Miller’s Sam. Sam and Suzy are #couplegoals at the age of 12, and are equal partners in their exploration and expeditions. It seems like Grande and Miller picked the perfect costumes (and location( for exploring.
