Octavia Spencer celebrated Martin Luther King day weekend by sharing her hit film, Hidden Figures, with others. On Friday, she posted to her personal instagram to invite low-income families to enjoy her film-- on her. Spencer bought out a theater in Los Angeles for an 8pm showing.

“Tomorrow I've bought the 8pm showing of #hiddenfigures the rave Baldwin hills. If you know a family in need that would like to see our movie but can't afford it have them come. It's first come first served. My mom would not have been able to afford to take me and my siblings,” Spencer wrote. “So, I'm honoring her and all single parents this #mlkweekend Pass the word.”

Spencer’s film felt especially fitting for the long weekend celebrating the iconic civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. In the true story about 3 African American woman working as mathematicians who calculated flight trajectories for NASA in the 1960’s. The women were not only pioneers in their field, but consistently had to fight for their right as students and professionals (Mary, for example, must be given permission to attend night classes while earning her engineering degree at an all-white school.) It is a true story of the strength and resilience of three brilliant African American woman, and Spencer wants to be sure that young boys and girls are able to see it told on the big screen (because #representationmattersalways).

Now that awards season is in full swing (and trust me, I’m counting down the days to the Oscars like it’s Christmas) we’re stoked we will be seeing a lot more of Spencer and the rest of the Hidden Figures ensemble.
