Dear THINX Fam,
From day one, our vision at THINX has been to be a conscious business, which integrates our mission and giveback into the core of our brand.
Before launching, we spent time thinking about the best business model to support women around the world, and originally explored the well-known "one-for-one" model. But, after finding that simply giving products away to folks in need can sometimes hurt local businesses/economies, we determined that funding a for-profit company was the best way to approach this problem.
Over the past three years, we have *almost* been able to achieve our vision through our partnership with AFRIpads, as you know, an organization based on the ground in Uganda that offers girls affordable menstrual products. Through this work, we've proudly helped 60 thousand girls go back to school, and have helped AFRIpads grow their company from 25 employees to 175+ employees all locally in Uganda.
I say *almost* because we realized that over time, we not only outgrew our partnership with AFRIpads, but we weren't fully integrated into our giveback process; it began to feel more like a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) model, and our dream was always to truly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with girls worldwide, and be totally involved, start to finish.
As we've grown, we've come to understand that there is much, much more to be done–and that we wanted to reach even higher and support girls holistically. Girls around the world lack safe spaces where they're able to learn and talk openly about their bodies, health, safety, and finance, and where they can ~still~ find access to menstrual products.
To meet this need, we formed our THINX Foundation, which is now *officially* a THING (we even got thinx.org and err'thang)!! Under the Foundation, we are launching our very first initiative, which is our THINX Global Girls Clubs. We've spent this past year creating a six-month curriculum (with the input of local NGOs around the world) that helps girls understand their bodies better, learn about what menstrual products are available to them, learn self-defense, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. Our very first Clubs will be based in Sri Lanka and India, and we cannot be more thrilled to finally launch this!
All this means for *you*, is that our giveback language needs to change. It's exciting that that the power of each purchase is now even greater. Each pair of THINX a customer buys will directly fund The THINX Global Girls Clubs–just like it did before, but with a bigger impact for even more girls. And, because we've taken our giveback ops in-house, we can finally be super transparent and share annual impact reports from our Foundation. We're anticipating an official launch (read: benefit gala fun times) in March-ish, so stay tuned for more info!!
Proudly and excitedly,
Miki, Shama + Monica
