Michelle Obama Has Her Last White House Interview With Oprah Winfrey

Michelle Obama had her final interview as first lady, and naturally, the interview was conducted by the first lady of television, Oprah Winfrey.

The pair were already pals before the interview, and spoke about possibly taking a “glamping” trip on the California coast (we’ll be checkin’ their Instagram’s frequently.) Even with the charming banter, Oprah asked Michelle the tough questions, including the disappointing election season, stereotypes that black women face, and if she’ll run in 2020 (perhaps opposite Mr. West?)

The First Lady was direct with her answers, especially when it came to a potential future campaign. After saying “no” but still received prompting questions from Winfrey, she said “Look, that's one thing I don't do; I don't make stuff up. I'm not coy. I'm pretty direct. If I were interested in it, I would say it. I don't play games. People don't understand how hard this is, and it's not something [where] you just cavalierly ask a family to do it again." While we’re super disappointed to hear the Harvard Law School grad won’t be running the country in the future, Lady O assured Oprah that she’ll still be around to help the new President-elect. Despite saying that the election was “challenging” to watch (biggest understatement of the century?), she still welcomed Donald and Melania Trump at the White House and offered her support to the next first lady.

“My offer to Melania was, you really don’t know what you don’t know until you’re here, so the door is open, as I’ve told her and as Laura Bush told me and other first ladies told me,” she said. “We will do whatever they need to help them succeed.”

Oprah touched on the “angry black woman” trope that the First Lady faced during Barack’s initial campaign and her early days in the White House (an injustice that is expertly explained and explored here) and how Obama moved past it. “That was one of those things where you just sort of think, ‘Dang, you don’t even know me...but then you sort of think, ‘This isn’t about me.’ This is about the person or people who write it, you know? That’s just the truth.”

It is the truth, and here is our truth: we’re going to miss you, First Lady Obama. Never change!
